What is the Bend Transportation Safety Action Plan?

The Bend Metropolitan Planning Organization (BMPO) is updating its Transportation Safety Action Plan (TSAP) to make Bend’s roads, sidewalks and bike lanes safer for everyone. This plan will guide long-term goals, policies, and strategies, as well as short-term steps needed to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on our roads. The plan allows us to track progress and see how effective these solutions are over time.

Whether you drive, walk, roll, bike, or take the bus, we want to make sure you can travel safely.

Project Goals

The Bend TSAP will:

  • Strive for zero deaths and serious injuries on all roads within the Bend area.
  • Include broad representation of the community in the planning process, especially those who have faced higher rates of traffic injuries and deaths.
  • Create a list of safety projects and strategies that can save lives.
  • Establish a system to track progress.

Why improving safety matters

  • Improves daily commutes and emergency response – reducing crashes reduces road closures and delays.
  • Prevent crashes – identifying trends can help us proactively implement safety measures.
  • Lower risk of you or someone you know being injured or needing expensive car or bike repairs just from traveling around town.
  • Reduce driving stress through better design and fewer conflict points.
  • Education and reminders can reduce distraction and encourage sharing the road.

We want to hear from you!

Where have you experienced or seen repeated conflicts, crashes, or near misses? What intersection or street makes you uncomfortable to use? Hearing from community members is essential to understanding the safety concerns people face. Your responses will help prioritize the locations and issues that matter most to our community. Please share your experiences through our survey and interactive map!
