Project Overview

Dakota County is updating its long-range vision and goals for parks, greenways, and natural systems in the county. Current vision and goals were adopted in 2008 as part of the 2030 Park System Plan. This effort will evaluate community interests to develop new objectives for parks, greenways and open spaces under County jurisdiction.

This plan is not only about our parks and how we access and enjoy them. It is also about the vital role that open spaces play in preserving greater natural systems that support ecological and human health.

The work will:

  • Adapt to changing demographics and new trends in recreation.
  • Address important issues such as respecting cultures, climate, ecology, and equity.
  • Assess the need for new parks, greenways, trails, protected areas, and recreational activities.
  • Imagine how interconnected landscapes can create a healthy environment.
  • Evaluate how well parks and greenway trails serve all people in the community.
  • Incorporate environmental improvements that benefit both residents and visitors.
  • Develop system-wide goals for engagement, partnership, and co-management with the Dakota Indigenous community.

Dakota County 2050 Vision Plan Released for Public Comment

Over the past year the project team sought feedback from the community and analyzed the current state of Dakota County parks, greenways, and natural systems. The findings formed the basis of the Dakota County Parks, Greenways, and Natural Systems 2050 Vision Plan . The plan is designed to be visionary, aspirational, and optimistic while also addressing some of the most pressing challenges faced today and anticipated in the future. The 2050 Vision Plan will guide improvements over the next 25 years.

The plan is available for community input through May 20. Please review the plan, talk to us at an upcoming event, and take the online survey to provide input.
